I subtracted democrat percent change from republican percent change for each county for both 2000 and 2004, then plotted them against each other. On the horizontal axis is the difference between the two for 2000, and on the vertical axis is the difference for 2004. Where the value is negative (lower left corner), the democrat percent change was more positive (or less negative) than the republicans - ie they were doing better. Where the value is positive (upper right), the republicans were doing better.
Note: There is a strong correlation between 2000 and 2004.
DISCLAIMER: Counties are grouped by voting machine type for 2004, and this pattern may change when we obtain and account for, voting machine type for 2000.
More studies of other states' patterns need to be done for comparison.
